What you need to get started:
A good quality DTG Printer with White Ink
Utilising any excess capacity in your DTG printer to print DTF transfers is the perfect way to maximise your return on investment in your printer and to expand your decoration capabilities beyond the typical limitations of DTG printers. Check out the Epson SureColor F2160 DTG printer for consistent, reliable DTG and DTF prints.
Flexible DTG RIP software
You’ll need to be able to reverse the normal DTG layering of ink – instead of white ink first, then colour on top, you’ll need to be able to print the colour layer to the film first, then the white ink on top of that. You’ll also need to be able to reduce the amount of ink to be printed – film is not absorbent like fabric is, so far less ink is required – typically up to 50% less white ink. As long as your software can do this, and reverse the layer order for your print, or allows you to choose to print two seperate jobs (colour first, then white), you’ll be able to print Direct to Film. Don’t forget that you’ll also need to mirror / flip your image before printing!
Humidity & Temperature control
If you are already running a Direct to Garment (DTG) Printer, you’ll likely have this in place. Correct humidity levels are essential for successful DTF – the powdered TPU glue in particular requires relatively low humidity for optimal application.
Quality DTF Transfer Film
Beware: Not all films are created equal!
DTF Films are coated with an emulsion which is receptive to inks (similar in concept to pretreatment for DTG printing) and which helps to mitigate colour and white ink bleeding or running when printing. In short, it needs to hold the ink before it is transferred, and then release it nicely during the transfer process. A fine, smooth, even coating of emulsion is essential for good, solid colour of the final print.
DTF TPU Glue Powder
Ever wondered why DTF TPU glue powder is almost always packed in coffee ground type air-tight, resealable packaging? It’s for the same basic reason as coffee is – to keep it fresh and dry.
DTF powdered glue should be dry (keep out of humidity) and of a small, consistent “ground” to provide the smoothest and most even coating of glue for your printed DTF image to adhere to the final product.
DTF Oven / Heat Press
After the printed film has had the powdered glue applied to it, the film should be placed in a DTF oven OR under a hovering heat press until the powdered glue is melted and the inks are cured.
A heat press is also a necessity to press the final resulting transfer decal on to the garment (pressure is required for this part of the process, a tunnel oven will not work).
The ideal heat press will allow you to set multiple “programs” or presets of time, temperature and pressure so that you can easily prepare your press for the different variables associated with curing of DTG Pretreat, DTG ink, DTF powder or for pressing final DTF transfers. The ST-4050A heat press with auto release, hydraulic pressure settings and 6 available programs is the perfect partner for your DTG / DTF business.
